💡Objectives:

  • To improve access to primary education and increase capacity

  • To improve teaching/studying conditions

  • To contribute to the alleviation of poverty

  • To provide a healthier working/studying environment; to motivate the teachers, and give the pupils a greater sense of wellbeing

The old primary school at Moraranokely started in 1974, built with funds raised by the villagers.  It consists of 2 buildings with a total of 3 classrooms. Both buildings were made of mud. The school was in a pitiful state, lacks capacity, and pupils have to be divided into two groups, with some being taught in the morning and others in the afternoon. Additionally, different levels have to share the same classroom due to a lack of space. The school doesn’t have the basic facilities needed to provide quality education, including classrooms, desks, chairs, and basic learning materials. The situation, where 121 pupils were accommodated in just three classrooms, was a major obstacle to providing quality education.

Moraranokely primary school required urgent attention to improve its infrastructure and capacity. By constructing these new classrooms, the school reduced overcrowding and provided a more conducive learning environment for the students. This allowed teachers to teach more effectively and provided more individual attention to each student. It enable the school to separate students by grade level, allowing for more specialized instruction and a better understanding of the students' individual needs.

The school had no water point in the school yard. The latrine was in poor condition and far to meet acceptable standards of hygiene and health.

The number of children in the vicinity who reach school age increases steadily each year.  About 50 more school age children are expected and even more in successive years.

The school has 3 teachers. The Ministry of Education currently meets the cost of one civil servant teacher, who is also the Head Teacher.  The other two, who are recruited locally, are paid partly in  cash and in kind (cassava and sacks of rice)  by members of the Association of Parents whose children attend the school. And the other two are subsidised by the government.
